Practically the whole football world was astounded when FIFA listened to USA president Donald Trump and allowed USMNT striker Folarin Balogun to play in the World Cup round of 16 against Belgium, after he was sent off against Bosnia-Herzegovina. And while FIFA president Gianni Infantino denied that Trump’s call was crucial for such a decision to be made, Trump himself boasted about it.

However, despite Balogun’s involvement, the USMNT lost heavily to Belgium, and some of their own supporters believe the situation robbed them of all dignity in defeat.

Playing at a World Cup puts strong pressure on players at the best of times. It certainly wasn’t easy for Balogun to stay focused.
