Experienced goalkeeper Darlow joins Man Utd on free transfer

Karl Darlow is relishing the “really special opportunity” to play for Manchester United after agreeing to join the Red Devils on a free transfer.

Darlow has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Old Trafford following his departure from Leeds United at the end of last season.

The 35-year-old arrives as back-up to United number one Senne Lammens, with Andre Onana returning to Trabzonspor on loan and Altay Bayindir expected to leave.

He joined Leeds from Newcastle United in 2023 and made 38 appearances across all competitions, and was Daniel Farke’s number one for most of the 2025-26 campaign.

Darlow played 24 times in all competitions for Leeds last season, keeping five clean sheets and conceding 29 goals.

“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” Darlow told the club’s website. “This is a really special opportunity.

“I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers, and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards which this club demands.

“Everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team-mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”

Darlow arrives at United with plenty of Premier League experience, having appeared 74 times in the competition with Newcastle and Leeds.

He becomes Michael Carrick’s second signing of the summer transfer window, with United confirming the arrival of Andrey Santos from Chelsea on Monday.

It is also expected that Youri Tielemans will bolster United’s midfield ranks, with the Aston Villa midfielder reportedly close to completing a £35m switch.

The Red Devils begin their Premier League campaign against newly-promoted Hull City on August 22 before returning home to face Ipswich Town eight days later.
