‘It was an easy decision’ – Hjulmand raring to go at Atletico Madrid

Morten Hjulmand says “it was an easy decision” to join Atletico Madrid due to their history as he looks to win silverware at the club.

The 27-year-old joined from Sporting CP this summer and signed a five-year contract after a reported €40m fee, with a further €5m due in add-ons, was agreed.

Hjulmand made 141 appearances for Sporting, directly contributing to 22 goals (10 goals, 12 assists) and winning two Primeira Liga titles.

Arsenal and Chelsea were reportedly two of the clubs who had interest in Hjulmand, before the midfielder decided to join Atleti.

Hjulmand revealed his reasons for the move, and how a conversation with Diego Simeone has boosted his excitement ahead of the new season.

“For me, it was an easy decision,” the Danish international said at his presentation on Monday.

“I heard that the club was interested in me, and because of its history in La Liga and European football, it commands a lot of respect in Europe, and this is a great inspiration to me.

“I see them as heroes because of the passion they show, and this is what made it so interesting for me.

“I’ve spoken with the coach, and in our conversation I’ve already sensed his passion and conviction for next season. And that was over the phone; I think it will be even easier in person.

“From day one, I want to contribute with my winning mentality, to do everything I can.

“The club has the respect of all the clubs in Spain. I’m here to win trophies, as many as I can. Whether it happens or not, we’re going to give it our all.”

Hjulmand could make his competitive debut for Atleti when they host Malaga in their 2026-27 LaLiga opener on August 16.
